According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year millions of adults aged 65+ suffer from a fall. Studies have shown nearly 25% of adults aged 65+ fall but the majority do not report their fall to their primary care physician.
Furthermore, the CDC adds that nearly 1 million Americans are injured annually as a result of falling on ice and snow.  Unfortunately, these injuries prove fatal for about 17,000 people every year. Further research has also shown that that by falling once an individual’s chances of falling again could approximately double.
Some common injuries that could result from a slip and fall on ice include:
- Herniated discs
- Compression fractures on knees, wrists or spine
- Muscle or ligament strains
- Concussion from hitting your head after a slip and fall
Falls aren’t limited to colder environments. As such, caution should be taken when performing activities such as hanging/re-arranging decorations around your house or engaging in wintertime recreational activities such as sledding or ice skating.
Additionally, care should be taken with making sure entryways and stairs are free from ice and water tracked in from outdoor elements and footwear. As we approach the winter months, careful consideration should be taken to mitigate or prevent the potential for falls that could occur inside and outside our homes.
Of course, despite our best efforts, accidents can still happen. In the event you or a relative experience a slip, trip, and fall, it is highly recommended to consult your primary care physician to further assess your condition. As part of your recovery, they may recommend a period of physical therapy to address any issues with swelling, loss of range of motion and/or strength among other things. Rest assured our team of experts at Attain PT will ensure your balance and strength are ready for the winter months!
